Millennials turn their backs on dull workplacesOne in five 18-24 year-olds say they have rejected a potential employer because they were put off by the state of the premises, according to new research.

The survey, conducted by One Poll for Mindspace, has found that employers are struggling to attract and retain young talent due to the importance that the younger generation is placing on the aesthetics and vibe of the workplace.

Over a fifth of millennials (21%) say they have rejected a potential employer because of the poor look of their office and 16% say they have previously left a job because of the state of their workplace.

The findings show that 31% of all workers are becoming bored with their current work environment - 28% say their workplace is "outdated and dull", 24% say it makes them feel tired and 20% say it makes them feel stressed.

According to the research, most Brits (82%) visit the same workplace five days a week and most (80%) work from the same desk in the office. While many have access to amenities such as a kitchen (72%), meeting rooms (66%) and free tea and coffee (53%), workers say their morale would be improved with more natural light, air conditioning and better lighting.

Despite the trend for open plan offices, 46% of those polled say there is limited or no collaboration between teams and departments at their workplace and 19% do not feel that their workspace encourages collaboration with others.

Dan Zakai, co-founder and ceo at Mindspace, said: "It's insightful to see that so many graduates and young workers are turning their back on potential employers because of the poor design of their office. Millennials are the future of the workforce and will constitute over 50% of the working population in the next few years.

"While many young workers in the UK still value a good workplace culture and decent salary, employers need to start placing a much larger emphasis on the aesthetics of the office and fostering a more collaborative workspace in order to retain and attract the best young talent through their doors."
